Archaeologists have recently shed light on the origins of chocolate by tracing the spread of the cacao tree across the ancient world. By analyzing genetic material found in 5000 year old ceramic pots, researchers were able to identify that cacao trees, which grow the pods used to make chocolate, originated in the Amazon and spread across the globe from there. Unfortunately, Reuters notes that disease and climate change have been impacting harvests heavily over the past few years. Researchers hope that a better understanding of cacao's genetic origins can help farmers fight back and keep your favorite chocolate in stock.
